The True Story Behind the Film

ABLE is inspired by the true story of Kayla Kosmalski, a young woman with Down syndrome whose life challenges the assumptions people often place on those with disabilities. Through Kayla’s story, the film invites audiences to look beyond limitations and reconsider what they believe is possible.

Kayla's Story

When Amy and Rick Kosmalski welcome their daughter, Kayla, they’re shocked by her Down syndrome diagnosis. Determined not to let others define Kayla’s future, Amy pushes against every barrier, ensuring Kayla exceeds all expectations — reading at four, thriving in a traditional classroom, and pursuing her dreams. But as Kayla faces rejection and social isolation, Amy questions whether she’s pushed too hard. In a powerful moment, Kayla takes control of her destiny, showing that while you can’t change everything, giving your all leaves no room for regrets. This heartwarming, inspiring film is for anyone facing the seemingly impossible.

Changing the Narrative

When new parents receive a Down syndrome diagnosis, the conversation is too often framed in fear rather than hope. But the reality tells a different story. Research consistently shows that families raising a child with Down syndrome report deep joy, meaning, and fulfillment.

Children with Down syndrome are redefining what’s possible every single day.

Our goal is to encourage and affirm families walking this path, and to offer a new perspective to those just receiving this diagnosis, one that replaces fear with celebration. We want every viewer to walk away inspired to rise above the limitations life may place in front of them.

And we can’t think of a more powerful way to do that than by sharing
the story of Kayla Kosmalski.

the Lucky Few

Some parents call themselves “the lucky few,” those who had the opportunity to discover the joy, perspective, and possibility that can come with raising a child with Down syndrome.

ABLE is part of a growing movement to change the conversation from fear and limitation to hope, possibility, and celebration. We believe every family deserves the chance to see what’s possible before a diagnosis ever defines what they believe their child can become.
